That Was The Year That Was

by Alex Chase on December 18, 2011

We’ve little patience for endless end-of year lists, but here are a few highlights from the most important categories:

BUTTOCK-PAINTING OF THE YEAR

Mr Muthaf*ckin’ Exquire ft Despot, Das Racist, El-P & Danny Brown – Huzzah (Remix). And the best posse cut too.

MOST FUN HAD WHILE HIGH

151 Feva Gang – Kush Groove. In a year where weed intake in rap was equated with spacey slow jams, these guys showed that obvious samples, rollerskates and tiger-print trousers are the way to do it.

HIPSTER RECORD THAT WAS ACTUALLY GOOD

Peaking Lights – 936. Sometimes the hipsters are right, damn them.

MOST SLEPT-ON MODERN CLASSICAL/SOUNDTRACK ISH

Hauschka – Salon Des Amateurs. The master of the prepared piano delivered another wonderful album. People didn’t seem to notice.

What did we miss?

Ha, great categories – end of year lists are best when they’re short and a bit ridiculous.
